課程概述 |
This course aims to teach the fundamentals of glycobiology inclusive of aspects on functional glycomics, chemical and translational glycobiology. It is partly based on the recently updated textbook “Essentials of Glycobiology 3rd edition”, which is freely available on the NCBI bookshelf, and supplemented by other materials extracted from recent original research and review articles on relevant subject matters. The first module will introduce all common forms of glycosylation that collectively make up the cell surface glyco-code, with emphasis on their generic structures, biosynthesis and known functional implications. The second module aims at introducing the various proteins that recognize, bind and mediate the functions of glycans, in the context of infection and immunity. The final module will then reiterate the chemistry underlying the various glycans and how chemical glycobiology can be effectively applied for diverse range of translational research, including strategies in developing glyco-based therapeutics and vaccines. Students are also taught the common experimental approaches in glycobiology through interactive discussion of assigned reading materials and oral presentations. Course assessment will be based on these presentations and Q&A during the discussion seminar scheduled towards end of the classes. |
